The design of the Market by Theodoros Photiades consists of cross-shaped circulation corridors and open, undivided spaces for stalls on either side for the sale of goods and produce. The construction is of reinforced concrete frame with a stepped roof section incorporating clearstorey strip windows for lighting and ventilation. At the crossing of the corridors there is a large glazed lantern dome. The stepped section is reflected in the front elevation, on either side of a monumental central portal with a lofty arched doorway. Hollow clay bricks were used to reduce the weight of the reinforced concrete roof slab construction.
