Thousands of Cypriots flocked into Famagusta, July 8, to take part in a great 3-day youth festival, organized by the island’s left wing unions and federations. A big parade marched through the crowded city streets to the stadium carrying banners proclaiming “Peace, Friendship, Democracy – down with War” and “No new Hiroshima”. At the stadium hundreds of boys and girls danced in gaily coloured national dress and were enthusiastically cheered by a vast crowd. On the last day of the celebrations – held to express the wish for peace and democracy throughout the world – the large, flag-carrying procession marched from the stadium to the centre of the town where many people addressed the crowds, including the Mayor, Mr. Pouyouros.
