The image shows the plan, elevations and sections of Stavros Economou’s Municipal Baths of Famagusta.
The progressive Municipality of Famagusta built modern Municipal Baths for the public, many of who lacked facilities in their homes. The building complex comprised fifteen showers and five bath tubs for men and eight showers and four bath tubs for women.
There were also refreshments rooms. The design by Municipal Architect Stavros Economou was in impressive Modern Movement style. The separate wings for men and women were linked by a central block containing offices, refreshment and recreation rooms. The elevational treatment expressed the reinforced concrete framed construction, glazed infill for the public areas and roughly dressed natural stone cladding on the ground floor. The sculptural octagonal reinforced concrete water tower became a reference point in the town.
